What is Microscope Endodontics?
Microscope endodontics, also known as micro-endodontics, involves the use of a microscope to aid in endodontic procedures. This advanced technology allows us to access hard-to-see areas of the tooth, increasing the likelihood of a successful outcome. Endodontics encompasses treatments and procedures that address or preserve the inner tissues of the teeth, known as the pulp.
Once your teeth have fully developed, the pulp becomes unnecessary, but it contains blood vessels and nerves. When the pulp is damaged or inflamed, it can lead to pain, sensitivity, and discoloration. If untreated, inflamed pulp can cause an abscess, which may spread infection throughout your body and lead to tooth loss. Due to the small and intricate structure of your tooth, performing many endodontic procedures can be challenging, especially when hidden canals are not visible to the naked eye.
The microscope used in microscope endodontics magnifies the inside of the tooth, allowing us to locate and treat all the canals within it. While the procedures are the same as conventional techniques, the added magnification provides precision in identifying which parts of the tooth need attention. Microscope endodontics includes common procedures like root canal treatments (removing the tooth’s pulp) and apicoectomy (removal and replacement of an infected root).
What are the Benefits of Microscope Endodontics?
Microscope endodontics offers numerous advantages that make it an excellent choice for individuals needing endodontic care:
Helps Preserve More of Your Tooth
The use of a microscope allows us to see exactly which areas of your tooth are being treated, offering greater precision and enabling us to preserve more of your tooth’s natural structure. This helps reduce the chances of cracks or fractures in the future.
Increases the Success Rate of Your Endodontic Procedure
Endodontic treatments, such as root canals, can sometimes fail due to bacteria being left inside or entering the tooth before it’s fully sealed. Microscope endodontics significantly increases the chances of a successful procedure by enhancing visibility, enabling us to thoroughly remove all bacteria and damaged tissue, even from hidden or tiny canals.
Can Help You Keep Your Tooth
If a previous root canal has failed, there are options like root canal retreatment or extraction. However, we aim to preserve your natural tooth whenever possible to maintain optimal oral health and prevent bone loss in the jaw. Retreatment with microscope endodontics can enhance the success of the root canal and help save your tooth by providing greater visibility into areas missed during a conventional procedure.
