What is Pediatric Endodontics?
Pediatric endodontics involves several procedures aimed at treating infection, disease, and trauma in children’s teeth. The specific treatment depends on the condition of the tooth and whether it is a primary (baby) tooth or a permanent one.
A pulpotomy is a procedure similar to a root canal, performed on baby teeth. It doesn’t remove all the pulp, but only the part at the crown of the tooth. Many people believe that infections or injuries in baby teeth don’t require treatment, but leaving them untreated can cause the infection to spread and lead to significant pain for the child. The pulpotomy removes the infected pulp from the crown while preserving the pulp near the roots, allowing the tooth to continue to grow and develop.
If the infection extends to the root, a full root canal, or pulpectomy, may be necessary. This procedure removes all the pulp in the tooth and seals it to prevent further issues.
In some cases, a regenerative endodontic procedure is used. This technique cleans the pulp and encourages the tooth to produce new pulp, which is particularly helpful for children with a serious infection in a developing permanent tooth. An apicoectomy may also be performed, which removes part of the tooth’s root and any infected tissue, often when a root canal fails or if the tooth’s canal is inaccessible.
What are the benefits of Pediatric Endodontics?
Pediatric endodontics offers several benefits for children dealing with infected or damaged teeth:
- Prevents the spread of infection
If dental infections are left untreated, they can spread, affecting other teeth and oral tissues, and potentially leading to severe illness. Pediatric endodontic procedures remove infections, ensuring the child’s overall health is maintained. - Preserves natural teeth
Preserving a child’s natural teeth, even primary teeth, is ideal. Baby teeth help maintain space for adult teeth to grow. If they are lost prematurely, it can lead to crowding and spacing issues as other teeth shift. Healthy teeth also support proper chewing and speaking. - Reduces pain and discomfort
Pain from decaying or injured teeth can interfere with a child’s ability to focus on school or enjoy daily activities. Pediatric endodontics addresses the pain caused by infected or inflamed pulp, easing discomfort and restoring tooth function.
