What is Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy or endodontics microsurgery is a specialized endodontic surgical procedure performed to remove the tip of a tooth’s root and eliminate persistent infection that remains after a root canal treatment. The procedure begins with a small incision in the gum tissue near the affected tooth to expose the underlying bone and root tip. The infected or inflamed tissue, along with the root apex, is carefully removed, and the area is thoroughly cleaned. A biocompatible filling material is then placed to seal the root end and prevent reinfection. The gum tissue is sutured back into place, allowing for proper healing. Apicoectomies are typically performed under local anesthesia and offer a high success rate in preserving the natural tooth when non-surgical retreatment is not viable.
