What is Internal Bleaching?
Internal bleaching is a specialized whitening procedure used to lighten discoloration in endodontically treated teeth. Unlike external bleaching, which targets surface stains, internal bleaching addresses discoloration from within the tooth, often caused by pulp necrosis, trauma, or residual blood products after root canal treatment. The procedure involves placing a bleaching agent, such as sodium perborate or hydrogen peroxide, inside the pulp chamber after sealing the root canal. The agent remains in place for a few days to allow gradual whitening before being removed and replaced with a permanent restoration. Internal bleaching is a minimally invasive and effective solution for restoring the natural appearance of non-vital, discolored teeth while preserving their structural integrity.
